Making transport better for everyone

Transport is central to how people access work, education, services and opportunity. As travel patterns shift, local areas gain greater responsibility for decision-making, and public expectations continue to change, the need for clear, practical evidence has never been more important.

With this in mind, we’ve launched a dedicated Transport sector at IFF. The sector will support organisations looking to make better-informed decisions about transport policy, and deliver insight that reflects both the systematic challenges and realities of people’s everyday journeys.

Building on our research and evaluation expertise in the area, we’re focusing on what shapes people’s choices, how passengers experience reliability and performance, and what’s needed to make transport more inclusive across different places and communities.

Turning insight into better journeys

We know the policy context and practical pressures facing transport organisations. Our approach is flexible, combining the right methods and sector knowledge to help clients understand not just whether something works, but how, for whom, and in what circumstances.

Understanding transport often means understanding the wider context around it too, with a need to recognise how it links to broader social, economic and environmental factors or outcomes. Drawing on the existing knowledge and experience across the team in areas like housing, business, energy and accessibility means we can build a comprehensive picture of what’s trying to be addressed.

The new sector will be led by Becky Cartmell, who has re-joined IFF as a Research Director. Becky previously worked at IFF between 2017 and 2022, before moving to the Department for Transport, where she became Principal Social Researcher for Bus, Light Rail and Taxis.

Becky said:

‘I’m delighted to be rejoining the team at IFF to lead our new Transport sector. With deep expertise in passenger insight, evaluation and deliberative research, IFF Research are well placed to support clients in designing, delivering and evaluating transport policies and services that work for everyone’.
