New report published: How will employers respond to the apprenticeship levy?

A report on how large employers are likely to respond to the introduction of the apprenticeship levy, produced by IFF and IER at the University of Warwick, has just been published by the Department for Education, see here.

The qualitative study among 77 employers in 6 sectors found that while it would be ‘business as usual’ for employers in some sectors, particularly those with a long tradition of apprenticeship training such as engineering and construction, in other sectors the levy will act as a catalyst to increase the provision of apprenticeship training, with the payment of the levy tipping the balance for some employers towards apprenticeship as opposed to alternative training routes.

Some employers expressed concerns about having the capacity to expand their apprenticeships to the level required to reclaim their levy in full, and a few planned to write off the levy payment and absorb the cost. In next week’s blog we will look at some of the key findings from this report.
