Local sports initiatives for disabled people

Sports bodies wanted to discover how local sports organisation could better communicate with disabled people who may not otherwise take part in active pursuits.

How did IFF illuminate the facts with research?

Our research helped Sport England and the English Federation of Disability Sport create a framework of proposals to encourage disabled people to take part in exercise or sport.

Working in partnership with creative agency Hudson Fuggle, IFF developed a range of test communications materials for the research. Extended focus groups and in-depth interviews with people with a range of physical, mental and sensory disabilities were used to identify what works.

This came on the back of previous campaigns about barriers for disabled people, which found that there needed to be clearer practical advice about how to deliver and communicate these activities.

The research findings helped to develop a toolkit for local organisations, setting out best ways to arrange sport/exercise activities for disabled people, and how to tell them about it. It includes plenty of visual examples and templates for local sport organisations to use.
