Sport England female participation in sport research

Sport England wanted to find out how to encourage more women to take part in sport and sought an evaluation of its Active Women programme.

How did IFF illuminate the situation with research?

IFF’s research told Sport England that its £10m Active Women scheme was having a positive impact, with over three-quarters of women reporting that the initiative had a positive impact on the amount of activity they did. We were also able to compare this perceived benefit to women’s actual level of activity pre- and post-involvement with Active Women.

Our recommendations for how to attract and sustain participation among women in disadvantaged communities or with childcare responsibilities have been widely shared within the sector and used to inform marketing activities encouraging women to get involved.

Over three years, we spoke to project leads, partners, coaches, volunteers and participants at a cross-section of projects across England. Workshops were also held for project delivery teams.
