Competition Commission Private Motor Insurance surveys 2013

In September 2012, the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) referred its investigation into the supply or acquisition of private motor insurance (PMI) and related goods and services in the UK onwards to the Competition Commission (CC).

How did IFF illuminate the situation with research?

The CC commissioned IFF Research to undertake two surveys among consumers, with the findings being used to support and inform the investigation. Two audience groups were identified and surveyed:

  • Not-at-fault claimants – to understand who managed their claim, the nature of the services they received, and whether they were aware of their legal rights.
  • PMI customers – to understand purchasing behaviour and experiences, their attitudes to switching policies, and awareness of what their insurance covers in the event of an accident.

We worked closely with CC to develop and refine the questionnaires, responding to comments and providing input on question ordering and wording.

A total of 3,000 telephone interviews were conducted across both groups of motor insurance policyholders.

Respondents in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland were deliberately over-sampled, with quotas set for each country, to ensure sufficient base sizes for robust and reliable analysis at country level. At the analysis stage we weighted the data by car ownership across the four countries to correct for this over-sampling.
